Repellent chemicals provide good defense against termites as they are easily identified and strongly avoided by them. Unfortunately, when there is a gap in the chemical, either from being unable to access all areas, or if a treated area is later compromised, white ants can identify the gaps and gain access.

The widely used repellent chemical is Bifenthrin, which features a residual lifetime of as much as five years.

Non-Repellent Chemicals

Non-repellent chemicals are not identified by termites, and they do not steer clear of the treated areas. As a result of this, white ants go over the chemical and die as a result of exposure to it. Individual termites transfer the chemical onto fellow colony members, causing a flow on effect.

Because termites can’t tell the difference between treated areas to non-treated locations, the chance of termite access through non-treated gaps is far lower.

The regularly applied non-repellent chemical is Fipronil, this has a residual life of as much as eight years.
